Event Details

This event, hosted by Shared Intelligence on behalf of the Department for Transport (DfT), will enable delegates to hear about the findings of recent Motorcycling road safety research studies commissioned and published by the DfT. There will also be opportunities to learn from local actions to address motorcyclists’ safety in Cumbria and Norfolk.

Speakers confirmed for the event include:

  • Richard Cuerden, Programme Development Manager at the Transport Research Laboratory - will present research looking at the behavioural and ergonomic factors contributing to motorcycle crashes by studying rider behaviour and the interactions between motorcycle riders and car drivers;
  • Simon Christmas will present research which looks at how understanding motorcyclists' attitudes to safety can lead to useful segmentation of “types” of riders and the factors that underpin their attitudes to and behaviour when riding.
  • David Crundall of Nottingham University will present findings emerging from his research into Car Drivers’ Skills and Attitudes to Motorcycle Safety;
  • Dr Paul Broughton of OWL Research Ltd will present findings from recent research relating to the norms and perceived norms of group motorcycle riding;
  • Heidi Bailey will outline the activities that make up the bikersthink! Campaign in Cumbria; and
  • Ian Temperton of Norfolk County Council will set out Norfolk’s approach to the problems associated with powered two wheelers.
